Yum

tomato/pasta salad

A very summery supper! Fresh tomatoes – which were cheap even at that bastion of overpriced produce, metro – basil and rosemary that we grew ourselves, feta and romano cheese, garlic, lemon juice, olives and olive oil, chick peas, and probably a few other things that I’ve forgotten. Yum! And it’s so nice to eat cold food when it’s hot and sticky outside!

The very best thing is that we made a huge amount, so I have something to munch at work tomorrow.

World Cup Aftermath

French Flag Dog

This afternoon, I watched the game at Bar des Pins. Oddly enough, it was half-empty, though any bar, cafe, or restaurant with a tv on St.-Laurent was packed. I can only imagine the chaos up in Little Italy! I did take several other photos after the game ended.

I’m also very glad that I’m living in a quieter neighbourhood now!

Switched to WordPress

I finally gave in and abandoned bBlog – the software I had been using to run this blog. I really liked it, but development had kind of stalled, (though a successor, loquacity, has picked up where it stopped) and I was getting fed up with the amount of spam I was getting. WordPress is much more widely-used, and there are a million plugins for various forms of spam-blocking.

My main complaints about wordpress so far are fairly minor – there’s way too much pointless javascript on the admin page, for one. The conversion, while tricky, wasn’t nearly as hard as I expected. I was really not looking forward to redoing the themes again, because it took some time to get bBlog to match the look of the rest of the site, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that it wasn’t too hard. Of course, I could reuse a lot of the same css that I had from bBlog, so it went much more quickly. The other big advantage is that WordPress has quite fantastic documentation, while bBlog’s is pretty nonexistent.

Anyway, it’s probably not perfect – I’m sure there are some layout bugs, etc… Please let me know if you see anything amiss!

Fearsome Critter

Yesterday I was tuning my harpsichord when I saw this beastie skitter along the floor:

nasty insect picture
Anyone know what it might be? My only guess is that it’s some odd sort of earwig, but it doesn’t really look like one… All the earwigs I’ve seen are much darker, and have longer abdomens. It is an insect though – 6 legs and all that. No visible wings. Luckily, it’s much smaller than it looks in that picture – only about a centimetre long. A mystery!

update: Apparently it’s a silverfish. I’ve never seen one so big before – I guess I’ve never seen an adult one though, since this is about the normal size for them, from what wikipedia says. I found what it was by looking on this site, (look on list 3…)

Yay for google! Now I just hope I don’t see many more of them…

Moving

The long and tedious process of moving to a new apartment….

New apartment

We’re mostly moved into our new apartment!

One room is still full of boxes and odds and ends, and there are a few things to bring over from the old apartment still, but we’re settling in!

Hiking in Vermont

Last weekend, I went hiking with 5 other people (6 if you count Erica, who’s just about 11 months old now). We did a little portion of the Long Trail in Vermont. It was a very soggy weekend and pretty chilly, but we still had a great time! Because of the weather, and because we were pretty late getting started, we changed some of the original plan. Figuring that it might start snowing on top of Mt. Killington, where we initially planned to hike, we took a slightly tamer route just to the South.
