this pic convinced me that it was a mite, and not some kind of insect - I thought they were tiny aphids at first, but you can see 8 legs pretty clearly here. There's no way I could have figured that out without the camera! Even with a little toy microscope I could see very clearly, but the legs were moving too quickly to count.
